Ritsurin Koen in Takamatsu is a stunning Edo-period garden known for its ponds, teahouses, and views of Mt. Shiun. Even in winter, its calm beauty shines through. I explored its vast grounds, collected stamps, watched koi and ducks by the pond, and ended the visit with a small souvenir and a peaceful meal nearby.

A quiet countryside walk, a steep forest climb, and 270 stone steps lead to the Sky View Torii Gate of Takaya Shrine—an unforgettable mountaintop view overlooking Kanonji and the Seto Inland Sea.

A day in Kan’onji revealed more than I expected—sweeping views of the Zenigata Sunae, the ancient Kotohiki Shrine, and the rare pairing of Jinnein and Kannonji Temples sharing one sacred space.

A spontaneous detour turned into a meaningful pilgrimage. The climb to Yakuri Temple was serene and rewarding, offering panoramic views over Takamatsu and a glimpse into one of Shikoku’s most sacred mountain legends.

Perched high above the city, Marugame Castle’s towering stone walls and original keep offer some of the most commanding views in Kagawa, making it one of Japan’s most striking surviving feudal castles.
