Ritsurin Garden - Kagawa, Japan

Ritsurin Koen in Takamatsu is a breathtaking landscape garden originally built by local feudal lords during the early Edo Period. It’s often ranked among Japan’s most beautiful gardens, featuring elegant ponds, sculpted pine trees, small hills, and traditional teahouses — all set against the scenic backdrop of Mt. Shiun.

Since I usually visit Japan in fall or winter, it wasn’t peak season for the garden. Even so, I could still appreciate its peaceful atmosphere and imagine how stunning it must look in spring or summer when the trees and flowers are in full bloom.

At the entrance, I picked up a map and a stamp rally sheet, which made exploring the vast grounds more enjoyable. Each section had its own charm — tranquil ponds filled with koi, shaded paths, and wooden pavilions perfect for taking a quiet break. I stopped at a bench overlooking the water, watching ducks glide by as I enjoyed the calm surroundings.

Ritsurin Koen also has a folk museum, tea houses, and small shops selling souvenirs and snacks. Before leaving, I exchanged my completed stamp sheet for a small prize — a Ritsurin Koen sticker, a nice little keepsake from the visit.

Afterward, I wandered through the nearby shopping streets and grabbed a meal at a local restaurant. It was a relaxed day, and strolling through the garden was the perfect way to slow down and enjoy Takamatsu’s natural beauty.

History & Background

Ritsurin Garden (栗林公園) is one of Japan’s most beautiful historical gardens and an easy day trip from Tokushima. Originally built in the early 1600s by local feudal lords, it took over a century to complete. The name means “chestnut grove,” reflecting the area’s natural beauty. With its ponds, arched bridges, and views of Mount Shiun, Ritsurin perfectly blends art and nature — a timeless example of Japanese garden design.
