Takamori - Kumamoto, Japan
The main plan for today was to visit Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine in Takamori, but somehow the day turned into an unexpected One Piece–themed adventure.
I started early, knowing there would be plenty of transit and wanting to fit in all the spots I’d planned. From Kagoshima-Chuo Station, I headed toward Higo-Ozu Station. With about an hour to spare before my connection to Takamori, I took a short walk to a nearby park to see the Zoro One Piece statue.
The train ride to Takamori was scenic and enjoyable. The conductor occasionally made announcements pointing out local points of interest, which added a nice touch to the journey.
Upon arriving at Takamori Station, I was greeted by the Franky One Piece statue right next to the tracks. I also spotted a One Piece–themed one-man train and snapped a few photos before catching the bus toward Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine.
The shrine sits a short hike away, with a cave located just above it. Its exact founding date is unknown, but it’s believed to date back to the Heian period (794–1185) and is connected to the Kumano faith. Local legends say the site holds strong spiritual energy. Many visitors come to pray for purification, protection, and good fortune. Passing through the hole in the cave above the shrine is said to bring blessings or help overcome personal challenges. The shrine’s serene, picturesque setting made it easy to see why it draws those seeking spiritual peace.
Unfortunately, the return bus schedule didn’t align with my plans, and rather than wait two hours, I decided to walk the 6.6 km to Takamori Yasui Tunnel Park. Originally intended as a railway tunnel, it was never completed. Today, it features a unique indoor light installation and a small outdoor park. Since it was close to Christmas, several decorated trees—each designed by local businesses—added a festive touch. It was a pleasant surprise after the long walk.
Afterward, I returned to the train station and bought a ticket toward Tateno Station. To my delight, it was on the One Piece–themed one-man train, packed with fans. The train was full of fun anime details, making it a memorable ride.
I transferred at Tateno Station and continued on to Aso Station, where I wrapped up the day. Tomorrow, I’ll be doing some hiking around Aso.
History & Background
Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine (上色見熊野座神社) – Believed to date back to the Heian period (794–1185), this shrine is tied to the Kumano faith, one of Japan’s major pilgrimage traditions. It’s known for its spiritual energy and the sacred cave above it, said to bring blessings and strength to those who pass through. Surrounded by quiet forests and misty mountains, the site blends natural beauty with a deep sense of spirituality.
Getting There
The best way to reach Takamori in Kyushu is by car, as public transportation options are limited, especially after the 2016 earthquake. Alternatively, you can take the Kyushu Sanko Bus from Kumamoto Station, which runs a few times a day. From farther cities like Hakata, take a train to Aso Station and then switch to the local bus. I started my day from Kagoshima-Chuo Station, taking the Shinkansen to Kumamoto, then transferring to the Hohi Line to Higo-Ozu, and finally the Minamiaso Tetsudo to Takamori Station.
