With pine-covered islands scattered across a calm bay, Matsushima continues to live up to its reputation as one of Japan’s most scenic places. From coastal walks and historic teahouses to a sunset boat tour through the islands, this unplanned afternoon from Sendai turned into a quietly memorable experience.

Naruto, Shikoku, is famous for its dramatic whirlpools in the Naruto Strait. Visit the Uzu-no-Michi Walkway, take a sightseeing boat, explore Naruto Park, and enjoy local cuisine while discovering this scenic and cultural hotspot.

Geibikei Gorge in Iwate offers a tranquil escape with dramatic cliffs, calm waters, and traditional boat tours. Enjoy the natural scenery, toss “lucky stones,” and experience a centuries-old connection to Japan’s rivers and folklore.

A full day exploring the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns, complete with snorkelling, marine biology insights, and a delicious onboard BBQ. Rough waves and a cancelled helicopter tour couldn’t take away from the unforgettable experience of swimming above colourful coral gardens and spotting sea turtles on the journey back.

Abashiri is home to the southernmost drift ice in the world. I travelled here to see the famous ice on the Sea of Okhotsk. Sailing through the floating ice at sunset was an unforgettable moment — the orange glow over the frozen sea made it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
