MOL Sunflower Ferry: Osaka - Shibushi
After the JR Pass price increased, I started exploring other ways to travel in Japan. Since I planned to go to Kyushu after my Kumano Kodo trek, I chose the overnight ferry from Osaka to Shibushi Port after comparing costs. The train would’ve cost ¥22,510 plus accommodation, while the ferry was ¥18,300, including accommodation. Though the ferry took three times longer, I saw it as a unique experience.
The ferry had plenty of vending machines offering everything from ice cream to alcohol, plus an onboard restaurant. There were also microwaves, free tea, a hot water dispenser, and cutlery, making it quite comfortable. The bathing facility had an onsen overlooking the water, as well as shower stalls. My standard single room, accessed via QR code, was spacious enough since I packed light. There weren’t many passengers overall so the ferry was relatively quiet.
The journey was smooth, and I woke up early to watch the sunrise from the observatory deck. At first, it was closed due to strong winds, but once it opened, I got to see the sun rise beautifully over the horizon. Overall, I enjoyed the overnight ferry much more than I expected.
