Minoh Park - Osaka, Japan

Minoh Park is a beautiful natural escape just north of the city, offering a refreshing contrast to Osaka’s busy urban atmosphere. Despite its proximity, it feels worlds away, especially during autumn when the park becomes a popular destination for its vibrant fall foliage.

I took the train from central Osaka toward Mino-o Station and began my walk from there. The main path is wide, well-maintained, and easy to follow, making it accessible for most visitors. One of the park’s main highlights is the waterfall at the end of the trail, and that was my goal for the day.

As I made my way along the path, I passed a few small buildings and restaurants before reaching the midpoint near Ryuanji Temple. I briefly considered stopping in, but decided to keep moving. Instead, I took a detour onto a side trail that leads up to an observation deck I had heard about.

The climb to the observation deck was more of a workout than I expected. The trail consisted mostly of wooden steps—and a lot of them—but it was still well maintained and easy to navigate. Once I reached the top, the effort felt completely worth it. From up there, I had a great view of the Minoh River below and could even see parts of Osaka stretching out in the distance beyond the surrounding peaks. It was a perfect spot to take a break and just take everything in. I had noticed signs warning about possible monkey sightings along the way, but unfortunately didn’t spot any.

After resting for a bit, I made my way back down to rejoin the main trail and continued toward the waterfall. I’ll admit, I felt a bit underwhelmed when I arrived. The water flow was quite light that day, so it didn’t quite match what I had imagined. Still, Minoh Waterfall stands at about 33 metres tall and the area around it is well set up, with plenty of seating and small concession stands.

I took a few photos before grabbing a soft serve ice cream and finding a bench right in front of the falls. Sitting there, enjoying a snack with a view, turned out to be one of those simple but memorable moments.

Once I finished, I began heading back down toward the entrance area where the restaurants are located. I wanted to grab some lunch before catching the train back into the city. Being able to experience a place like this so close to Osaka yet surrounded by nature—made for a perfect half-day trip away from the crowds.

History & Background

Minoh Park (箕面公園), also known as Meiji no Mori Minoh Quasi-National Park, has been a designated natural area since 1967 and is one of the oldest parks in Japan. It has long been valued as a place of retreat, with its forested trails, seasonal foliage, and scenic waterfall drawing visitors for centuries.

The park is particularly famous for its autumn colours, typically peaking in November, when maple trees line the main walking path in shades of red and orange. Along the trail, visitors may also encounter traditional snacks such as momiji tempura—maple leaves that are battered and deep-fried, a local specialty unique to the area.

Getting There

Minoh Park is easily accessible from central Osaka via public transit. From Osaka-Umeda Station, take the Hankyu Takarazuka Line to Ishibashi Handai-Mae Station, then transfer to the Hankyu Minoh Line to reach Mino-o Station, which is the main gateway to the park. The total travel time is approximately 30–40 minutes.

From Mino-o Station, the main trail begins just a short walk away and leads directly through the park to Minoh Waterfall. Driving is possible, but parking is limited, especially during peak autumn season, so taking the train is generally the most convenient option.
