Camino Francés - Day 32: Arzúa to Lavacolla

The day began beautifully — cool, crisp air, cloudy skies, and a scattering of stars still visible as we set out. It felt refreshing after the long stretch through Arzúa. But the weather soon reminded us that Galicia can be unpredictable. Light rain began within a few hours and quickly escalated into a heavy downpour. At one point, we encountered a flooded underpass with no way around. Since our shoes were already soaked, we simply laughed and waded through the water, which reached our ankles.

By the time we neared O Pedrouzo, the rain eased a little, giving us hope that the worst was over. But before long, it returned with full force. Wet shoes and sodden clothes left us longing for warmth and comfort, so we decided to shorten our stage and stop in Lavacolla, just 10 km from Santiago.

When we finally checked into the albergue, the sun broke through the clouds. We immediately tackled laundry, dried our shoes as best we could, and indulged in long, hot showers. The combination of rest, warmth, and dry clothes felt incredible — a much-needed reprieve before the final stretch into Santiago tomorrow. Spirits were high despite the day’s weather, with excitement for the pilgrimage’s conclusion building with every step.

History & Background

The route from Arzúa to Lavacolla is one of the last major stages on the Camino Francés before Santiago de Compostela. The area around Lavacolla has historical significance for pilgrims: the town’s name is thought to originate from “lavacolla,” referring to the stream where pilgrims traditionally washed themselves and their clothes before entering the holy city, a ritual symbolizing purification and preparation.

This stage traverses rolling Galician hills, small hamlets, and forests. Despite being closer to Santiago, it retains the Camino’s rural charm and provides a final opportunity for reflection and camaraderie among pilgrims. Many stop here to rest and recharge before the pilgrimage’s final celebratory steps into Santiago de Compostela.

Getting There

Pilgrims typically depart Arzúa along the well-marked Camino Francés, passing through scenic villages and forested paths before reaching Lavacolla. The terrain includes gentle climbs and descents, with streams and small bridges dotting the route.

Lavacolla is also accessible via bus or taxi from Santiago de Compostela or Arzúa, providing flexibility for those walking shorter stages or arriving from other parts of Galicia. The town’s services cater specifically to pilgrims, including albergues, shops, and restaurants.
