Camino Francés - Day 27: Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro

I’d heard many pilgrims say that the climb to O Cebreiro is the second toughest of the Camino Francés after the Pyrenees, so I woke up mentally ready for a demanding day. The forecast called for heavy rain, and I knew my shoes wouldn’t stay dry for long.

The first 20 kilometres were gentle and relatively flat, winding through small villages and quiet country roads. The scenery was lush, with mist hanging over the hills — the kind of damp, moody beauty that defines Galicia’s borderlands. After passing Las Herrerías, the real climb began. At first, I wore just my rain jacket and pack cover, but soon switched to using my umbrella when I started overheating from the humidity and effort.

Streams of rainwater ran down the trail, turning it into a series of shallow rivers. I quickly gave up trying to avoid puddles; my shoes were soaked anyway, and it was easier to just walk straight through. Despite the conditions, the ascent felt steady and manageable. The air grew cooler with each step upward, and as I approached the summit, strong winds picked up, forcing me to pull my jacket back on.

I reached O Cebreiro around 1 p.m. and was the fifth pilgrim in line at the albergue. Thankfully, my pack had stayed dry, and after a hot shower, I could finally change into warm clothes. Later, I wandered through the misty stone village and found a small convenience shop tucked away on a side path — not easy to spot, but a welcome discovery. I stocked up on instant noodles and bread for dinner, then spent the evening chatting with friends I’d met along the way, all of us grateful to have made it up the mountain.

History & Background

The stage from Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro marks a dramatic and symbolic transition — both geographically and culturally — as pilgrims leave Castile and León and enter Galicia. The climb to O Cebreiro is one of the most iconic and challenging ascents on the Camino Francés, rising nearly 900 metres over a short distance.

O Cebreiro itself is steeped in legend. It is home to one of the Camino’s oldest churches, Santa María la Real, dating back to the 9th century. The village is famous for the Miracle of O Cebreiro, in which a peasant’s humble offering of bread and wine was said to have transformed into the body and blood of Christ during Mass. The site later inspired the design of the chalice used in Santiago de Compostela’s cathedral. The village’s distinctive pallozas — round, thatched stone dwellings — are a reminder of ancient Celtic influence in the region.

This stage not only tests endurance but also offers a profound sense of arrival. The landscape changes from vineyards and farmlands to misty forests and rolling green hills, signalling the beginning of Galicia’s mystical terrain.

Getting There

The route to O Cebreiro follows the traditional Camino Francés path west from Villafranca del Bierzo, gradually climbing through Las Herrerías, La Faba, and Laguna de Castilla before reaching the summit. It’s a steady and scenic ascent, though often wet and windy, especially in autumn.

For those starting or finishing their walk in this area, Villafranca del Bierzo is accessible by bus or taxi from Ponferrada, which has both train and long-distance bus connections to León, Santiago de Compostela, and Madrid. O Cebreiro, being a small mountain village, has no direct public transport links, but taxis from Pedrafita do Cebreiro (a few kilometres away) provide connections to major routes.
