Mount Rokko - Hyogo, Japan
I hiked Mt. Rokko from Higashi Otafukuyama, enjoying forest paths, a small river crossing, and panoramic views of Kobe and Osaka Bay. A perfect urban-adjacent retreat for a half-day adventure.
Mount Maya - Hyogo, Japan
I set out for a short walk to Nunobiki Falls, but the trail tempted me higher — all the way up Mt. Maya. With nearly empty trails, steep forested climbs, and panoramic views of Kobe and Osaka Bay, the hike turned into an unexpected urban adventure. A rare moment of solitude at the summit reminded me that even in a bustling city, nature has its hidden surprises.
Takeda Castle Ruins - Hyogo, Japan
Perched high above the town of Asago, Takeda Castle lives up to its nickname—the “castle floating in the sky.” Though winter closures meant a tougher climb and snow-covered ruins, the sweeping views and quiet atmosphere made the visit unforgettable.
Mount Shosha - Hyogo, Japan
I made a quick stop in Himeji to finally visit Engyoji Temple on Mount Shosha, a Buddhist site I’d always wanted to see. Instead of taking the ropeway, I hiked up through a quiet forest trail lined with fallen leaves and serene viewpoints. The temple’s scale and beauty were incredible—one of the most memorable places I’ve visited in Japan.
Himeji Castle - Hyogo, Japan
Walking through Himeji Castle with a volunteer guide brought centuries of history to life, turning Japan’s most iconic white castle into a deeply personal and unforgettable experience.
