Mount Omuro, Shizuoka, Japan

I wanted to see this perfectly conical dormant volcano. Hiking up the volcano isn’t allowed due to preservation, so the only way up is by chairlift. On the day I went, strong winds threatened to shut it down, but luckily, it was still operating.

At the top, the wind was so intense that walking was difficult, especially around the crater. Despite the challenge, the panoramic views of Mt. Fuji, the Izu Seven Islands, and Sagami Bay were breathtaking.

Inside the crater, there’s a shrine dedicated to the mountain goddess Iwanaga-hime. Archery is usually available here, but it was closed due to the wind. I spent most of my time taking photos, visited the souvenir shop, and then took the chairlift back down.

As viewing the conical shaped volcano doesn’t require a lot of time, it’s best to pair this with other activities around the area such as the Izu Shaboten Zoo. I visited after I’ve already done a hike elsewhere.
