Fukuroda Falls - Ibaraki, Japan

I visited a hidden gem in Daigo, Ibaraki Prefecture — the stunning 120-metre Fukuroda Falls (袋田の滝). While the waterfall is most popular during autumn for its vibrant foliage, I wanted to see it frozen in winter.

From Mito Station, I took a train to Fukuroda Station and walked toward the falls. Before starting the hike, I explored the illuminated tunnel leading to the viewing platforms, which were decorated with festive holiday displays. The frozen waterfall was breathtaking — a cascade of ice glistening in the winter light.

After enjoying the views, I exited through the back and began my hike up the steep steps beside the waterfall. Signs warned that the steps were steep, but I underestimated the challenge. Early on, the climb was manageable, but higher up, the steps became so narrow that only half a foot could fit on some! After roughly 470 steps, the trail levelled out, leading me to the summit of Mt. Tsukiore (404 m) and the ruins of an old castle.

I didn’t linger long at the top since the cold was setting in, descending through a forested trail back toward town. A warm bowl of soba awaited me in Daigo before I returned to Fukuroda Station, just making it in time for my train — with only three minutes to spare.

Background

Fukuroda Falls is one of Japan’s most famous waterfalls, often called one of the “Three Great Waterfalls of Japan” alongside Kegon and Nachi Falls. Located in Daigo, Ibaraki Prefecture, the waterfall cascades in four distinct tiers, creating a dramatic spectacle in every season. In winter, the falls freeze, offering a rare icy panorama that contrasts beautifully with the autumn foliage the site is renowned for. Nearby, Mt. Tsukiore hosts ruins of a medieval castle, hinting at the region’s historical importance during feudal Japan. The surrounding area has long been a destination for nature lovers and pilgrims seeking scenic beauty and quiet reflection.

Getting There

From Mito Station, take the JR Suigun Line to Fukuroda Station, a journey of roughly 1 hour and 40 minutes. From the station, the waterfall is about a 20-minute walk through town. Clear signage guides visitors to the main viewing platforms and the start of the hiking trail toward Mt. Tsukiore. The trails are well-maintained, but hikers should dress warmly in winter and be prepared for icy or narrow steps.
