Mount Tomi - Chiba, Japan
I wanted to visit Fusehime Rouketsu, a historic cave site, and decided to hike up Mt. Tomi (350 m) since the trailhead was conveniently nearby. I started from Iwai Station, about 2.6 km away. The walk to the trailhead followed quiet roads, offering glimpses of the surrounding forested hills and a sense of anticipation for the hike ahead.
The path first led to Fusehime Rouketsu, where steps climb to a platform beside the cave. A small, basic washroom is located at the cave entrance, though I wouldn’t recommend relying on it. From there, the trail to Mt. Tomi began. Initially, it looked rugged, with fallen boulders and uneven terrain, but a descending hiker reassured me it was manageable if I took my time.
The climb itself was challenging. Damaged trail sections, ropes tied to trees to aid scrambling, slippery sandy slopes, and fallen rocks all demanded careful navigation. Ascending felt easier than it would have descending. After some effort, I reached the main trail, where conditions improved, and the summit was just five minutes away.
The summit marker offered limited views, but a short walk to a nearby platform revealed a stunning panorama of surrounding mountains and the nearby city. The platform is quite old, so it’s important to follow the posted warnings about weight and capacity.
I descended via the Fukumanji Temple trail, which was significantly easier despite being covered in slippery leaves. For anyone hiking Mt. Tomi, I would recommend using the Fukumanji Temple route for ascent or descent—it’s safer, more stable, and still offers excellent scenery.
