Kawaguchiko Tenjoyama Park - Yamanashi, Japan
Kawaguchiko Tenjoyama Park is one of the more popular viewpoints in the Kawaguchiko area, known for its elevated views of Mount Fuji. It’s incredibly accessible thanks to the ropeway that takes you most of the way up, and initially, I thought it would just be a quick stop for a viewpoint. Once I got up there, though, I realized there was much more to explore.
There is a hiking trail that leads up to the park, but I opted for the easier route and took the Mount Fuji Panoramic Ropeway. After grabbing my ticket, the ride up was quick and smooth, bringing me to roughly 1,000 metres in elevation in just a few minutes. From there, I started wandering around the park.
My first stop was the main observation deck, where I took in the view of Mount Fuji. Even with some clouds, it’s one of those sights that immediately grabs your attention. From there, I walked over to a small shrine tucked just around the corner—Usagi Shrine.
That’s where I came across a surprisingly dark folk story involving a tanuki (raccoon dog) and a rabbit. The story goes that an old man captured a tanuki and hung it from a tree, but the tanuki convinced the man’s wife to release it, promising to help her make mochi. Instead, it killed her. Using its shape-shifting abilities, the tanuki disguised itself and tricked the man into unknowingly consuming his wife. A rabbit, who was a friend of the couple, sought revenge and repeatedly outwitted the tanuki before ultimately tricking it into riding a mud boat, which dissolved and caused it to drown.
It was honestly not the kind of story I expected to come across in such a peaceful setting. The park itself feels calm and scenic, but the tale explains the many rabbit and tanuki statues scattered throughout the area.
Nearby, there’s a small teahouse—Tanuki Teahouse—where you can sit and enjoy a light snack while looking out toward Mount Fuji. I didn’t stop for food here, but it looked like a nice place to take a break.
I continued further up the mountain toward a large swing attraction. For a fee, you can sit on it and have your photo taken with Mount Fuji in the background. I skipped it, but it was fun to watch others give it a try.
From there, I followed the trail up toward the peak of Mount Tenjo. There’s a small shrine at the top, and while the view of Mount Fuji is mostly obscured by trees, the surrounding scenery still makes it worth the short climb. You can continue on to other peaks from here, but I wasn’t prepared for a longer hike that day, so I decided to turn back.
Before leaving, I sat on one of the benches for a bit, taking in the quieter atmosphere before making my way back down via the ropeway. What I thought would be a quick viewpoint stop turned into a surprisingly layered experience with a mix of views, folklore, and light exploration.
Background
Kawaguchiko Tenjoyama Park (河口湖天上山公園) sits on the slopes of Mount Tenjo, part of the Fuji Five Lakes region in Yamanashi Prefecture. The area has long been associated with scenic views of Mount Fuji, making it a popular destination for both domestic and international travellers.
The folklore featured in the park is based on the Japanese tale “Kachi Kachi Yama,” a traditional story involving a tanuki and a rabbit. This story is reflected in the statues and themed elements found throughout the park today. The Mount Fuji Panoramic Ropeway was later developed to make the area more accessible, turning it into a well-known viewpoint with added attractions and cultural touches.
Getting There
The easiest access point is via Kawaguchiko Station, which can be reached from Tokyo by taking the JR Chuo Line to Otsuki Station, then transferring to the Fujikyu Railway Line to Kawaguchiko. The journey takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours.
From Kawaguchiko Station, the Mount Fuji Panoramic Ropeway is about a 10–15 minute walk. Visitors can either take the ropeway up to the park or hike via a trail that begins near the base. Driving is also an option, though parking near the ropeway can be limited during peak travel seasons.
