Camino Francés - Day 5: Pamplona to Puente la Reina

I left Pamplona while it was still dark, navigating heavy morning traffic through the city streets. The early urban start made the first part of the walk a little stressful, but once I reached the outskirts, the path opened up into quiet country lanes and rolling fields, making the hike much more enjoyable.

Today's highlight was Alto del Perdón (Hill of Forgiveness), a traditional pilgrim site symbolising reconciliation, reflection, and the letting go of burdens. The climb itself was gentle and manageable, but the descent was tricky due to loose rocks scattered along the path. I watched younger pilgrims dash down with ease while I carefully picked my steps, determined not to fall!

I arrived in Puente la Reina around 1:30 p.m., where I was delighted to run into a few pilgrims I had met on my first day. Together, we found a charming bakery and enjoyed a well-earned rest, chatting about our experiences so far and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere of the town.

History & Background

Puente la Reina is a historic town in Navarra, northern Spain, famed for its 12th-century Romanesque bridge, which spans the River Arga. The bridge was built to help pilgrims cross safely on their way to Santiago de Compostela and remains one of the most iconic landmarks along the Camino Francés. The town itself has a rich medieval heritage, with narrow cobbled streets, stone houses, and centuries-old churches. Alto del Perdón, visible from the surrounding hills, has become a symbolic site where pilgrims pause for reflection and, in some traditions, to forgive or seek forgiveness before continuing their journey

Getting There

The stage from Pamplona to Puente la Reina covers approximately 25 km along the Camino Francés, passing rural paths, small village streets, and rolling hills. The route includes moderate climbs, most notably the ascent to Alto del Perdón, which rewards hikers with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Walking is the traditional and most rewarding way to experience this stage, allowing pilgrims to enjoy the landscapes, historic sites, and the rhythm of the Camino. For those needing an alternative, regional buses or taxis connect Pamplona with Puente la Reina, offering flexibility while still arriving ready to continue along the trail.
