Yamanobe no Michi, Nara, Japan

While searching for places to explore in Nara, I found the Yamanobe no Michi Trail—Japan’s oldest recorded road. It sounded fascinating, so I decided to walk it myself!

The trail is well-marked and easy to follow, winding through Nara’s outskirts along the mountains. It passes by shrines, temples, and other historical spots. Along the way, locals sell fresh fruits and veggies from their gardens in unmanned stands. There are also rest areas and toilets available along the route.

I noticed most hikers were walking in the opposite direction—probably because more of the major shrines and temples are near Sakurai Station. Some of these sacred spots don’t allow photos, so be sure to respect the rules. Few of them do have an entrance fee, so have some change available.
