Mount Anba, Miyagi, Japan

I checked out of my hotel around 6 AM to explore Kesennuma before leaving. Since I had spent most of my time hiking the Michinoku Coastal Trail, I hadn’t seen much of the city center. My plan was to hike up Mt. Anba and visit the fish markets before catching my bus to Sendai.

The main trail to Mt. Anba was closed due to deterioration, so I had to take a longer route. I walked through the quiet morning streets before reaching the winding mountain roads. The climb was fairly easy, though some sections were mossy.

I stopped at a torii gate overlooking Kesennuma before heading to the peak—the view from there was better than at the summit. After hiking back down, I visited a couple morning fish markets, but not many stalls were open. I ended up in front of the Shark Museum, which was closed, though I wished I could have gone in.

I arrived at the bus stop 20 minutes early, and a line quickly formed behind me. The bus to Sendai was packed, but I managed to grab the last window seat!
