Chengcing Lake, Kaohsiung, Taiwan
The weather today shifted between heavy downpours and cloudy skies as I made my way toward Chengcing Lake, a man-made lake in Kaohsiung. Fortunately, the rain stopped just as I arrived, which made walking around the lake more pleasant. At the entrance, I tried to use the ticket machine, but it was out of order, so I had to buy my ticket directly from the booth instead.
There were a few spots I wanted to visit within the park: the Nine-Curved Bridge, the Zhongxing Pagoda, and the Chengcing Lake Bell Tower. The path around the lake is paved and well-maintained, making it a relaxing walk despite the damp weather. The hazy, overcast sky added a mysterious atmosphere to the historical landmarks.
Perhaps because it’s winter and the weather wasn’t ideal, the trails were almost completely empty. I didn’t see another person until I reached the Nine-Curved Bridge, where I spotted a few locals out for a walk.
I ended up walking about 75% of the way around the lake before deciding to head back toward the entrance. Along the way, I passed by BBQ areas, a hedge maze, and a children’s playground. This place is likely bustling with families and groups during the summer. I’ve heard that Chengcing Lake is especially popular in spring for cherry blossom viewing, and again in autumn when the trees turn vibrant shades of red and orange. While the greenery still looked lush even in winter, it’s clear that this isn’t peak season.
Still, despite the weather and sparse crowds, the visit was serene and enjoyable.
