Camino Muxía - Dumbría to Muxía
After completing the Camino Portuguese Coastal, I wanted to visit Muxía to fully conclude my journey, having already been to Finisterre. Rather than walking all the way from Santiago again, I took a bus to Dumbría, about 23 km from Muxía, arriving around 11 AM.
The weather was cloudy when I got off the bus, but as soon as I started walking, it began pouring. Throughout the hike, the weather alternated between sun and rain, so I was constantly putting my poncho on and taking it off. The upside was seeing numerous rainbows along the coastline—a beautiful, fleeting reward for braving the elements.
By the time I arrived in Muxía, the sun finally stayed out. I had planned to collect my Muxía certificate, but since it was Sunday, the office was closed. I’ll take care of that first thing tomorrow. In the meantime, I explored the town, visiting the zero-kilometre marker, the Santuario da Virxe da Barca, and the lighthouse. Each spot carried its own sense of history and pilgrimage tradition, and the coastal views made for a peaceful, reflective conclusion to my Camino.
History & Background
Muxía is a small fishing town on the Galician coast, historically connected to maritime culture and pilgrimage routes. The town is famed for the Santuario da Virxe da Barca, a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin of the Boat, where legend holds that the Virgin appeared to St. James in a stone boat. Pilgrims have long visited the site, and Muxía is often included as an extension of the Camino de Santiago for those continuing beyond Finisterre. The coastline features dramatic cliffs, lighthouses, and the zero-kilometre marker, symbolizing the westernmost points of the Camino.
Getting There
From Santiago de Compostela, the easiest way to reach Muxía is by bus. ALSA and local companies run services to Dumbría or Muxía directly; from Dumbría, it’s about a 23 km walk along scenic coastal paths to Muxía. The bus journey takes roughly 2–2.5 hours, with a few services per day.
Alternatively, pilgrims can walk the Camino Muxía extension, enjoying a mix of coastal trails, small villages, and stunning Atlantic views.
